River: Clear Creek: begins West of Georgetown; is dammed just east
of Georgetown; runs through Clear Creek Canyon along US 6 past Golden and into
the South Platte
North of Denver.
Fish:
Predominantly browns and rainbows with the possibility of brookies increasing as
you approach the headwaters. Most fish are in the 10-14 inch range with some
larger fish mixed in.
Bugs: Clear Creek is loaded with aquatic insects. Caddis flies are very
abundant following runoff and through the summer. The mayfly and stone fly
populations are also healthy
Flies: Dry flies work well; having a good selection of Stimulators, Elk
Hair Caddis, and various mayflies (PMD’s BWO’s, Red Quills, Green Drakes,
and Parachute Adams). For nymphs, many different patterns will work; bead head
prince, pheasant tail and stone fly nymphs work well in summer months. During
low water times a bead head brassie or small flashback pheasant tail works well.
Techniques: Pocket water dry/dropper fishing is very effective; is
important to use a short leader and long rod in the faster pocket water. In the
runs and pools, longer leaders are necessary: watch for rising fish and dry fly
opportunities! A 4 or 5 weight rod is ideal for fishing Clear Creek.
Seasons: River freezes during winter months above Georgetown. Remains
open most of the year below. Best fishing is in post runoff through fall. Good
fishing can also be had through the spring months.
Rating: With the easy access off of major highways and good amounts of
public access this stream is a good option for some close to home fishing near
the Denver-metro area. Pocket water is beginner friendly and variety of water
makes it interesting for all skill levels.
