River:
The Eagle River begins where the East and South Fork merge below
Tennessee pass on highway 24 south of the town of Minturn.
Fish:
While there is a good mix of rainbows and browns, the Eagle is known as a fine
rainbow fishery with fish averaging 10-15 inches.
Bugs:
The Eagle has all aquatic insect types, but is known for the fine caddis and
midge hatches it supports.
Flies:
A good cross section of standard nymphs and dries with heavy emphasis on caddis
patterns during summer months and midge patterns during spring and fall is
required.
Techniques:
Standard pocket water fishing with sight fishing for rising fish in flats and
pools.
Seasons:
winter fishing is poor due to freezing conditions. As the ice clears and before
runoff some good midge fishing may be had. Post runoff is excellent through late
fall, with July through September being the best. Again, watch for clear days
with little chance of rain!
Rating:
Good, but fickle depending on weather and rainfall.
