I begin shooting actual footage for the video series. The teaching process, something I’ve always enjoyed, is great fun and slightly exhausting. Tying past the camera - I’m committed to tying the fly as the tier sees it, rather than from the side, front or any other angle because I want to help folks tie nice flies well - is hard on my back and neck, but I persevere.
As it turns out, the editing process proves challenging. I have to learn another new program in order to collect, arrange, edit and then print the video that I’ve shot. A little at a time I finally figure it out. This includes playing and recording piano music for transitions, adding menus, credits, still pictures of real insects and so on.
Sometimes I have to stop and tie a few flies, pat Max or take a nap. I spend a lot of time tying classics, and learn.
My friend Roger calls to say he’d be willing to help the video program by purchasing the cameras and other gear required to get the project started. After buying the stuff, he drives to Colorado for a two week visit. We try reading manuals to figure out how to make the new gadgets work. We call Shan to the rescue. After all, we’re men: real men don’t read manuals.
After Roger leaves, I continue to practice and shoot video, working on lighting, camera position and so on in order to find the best way to teach fly tying skills using this technology. Shan decides what actually works.
NEWS!
All of a sudden, it is time to begin building the web site! Five DVD’s are complete with music, menus, credits and transitions. I haven’t built a web site since the shops closed and the program I’d used is no longer valid. (I still use the bamboo fly rods I’ve loved fishing with for many years. Interesting.)
I try to find and figure out several programs, but none seem to click for me. Finally, early this week, I find a web site that a friend made and ask him about the program he used. I check the link, look at the info and buy and download it that night. The next day is spent reading more manuals - there are no manuals in my videos: just play them to learn and enjoy!
Within three days I’ve published the web site and determined to continue working on it each day until it is in reasonable shape.
News from headquarters.
With a blog to come..
Four of the DVD’s are now available for purchase, with another to follow, maybe even today.

On Friday, the 4th, my dad would have turned 82 years old. Alas, he died in 2003 of liver cancer. The day before - the 3rd - was my sister’s birthday. Yesterday, our son-in-law’s brother was married in the Denver area and everything went great. Pretty neat. Our neighbors left this morning to fly to Virginia to see their brand new granddaughter and 3-year-old grandson. Pretty cool, eh?
And the river has come up dramatically. Last Friday, while thinking of dad, I fished with a friend and the flow was 125 cfs, which is about what it will probably be through the summer, all things being equal. On Saturday morning it was flowing at 780, and on Monday morning was nearing 1000cfs. USGS folks measured it near our place and said it was 990, so we’ll fudge it up that extra ten!
But the water will fall soon, based on what I’ve read and heard about how fast the snowpack is melting. We got most of this snow during April and May. Maybe in two weeks, when a friend comes for a visit, we’ll be able to fish here. If not, we might hit some high lakes for cruising trout feeding on emerging damsels. That’s always fun!
THANKS!
