St. Vrain Angler News & Muse September
20, 2005
Greetings!
I hope you are well this fine fall
day. It is Fall, by the way. That
means
summer is gone for 2005. How much fishing have we done? Did we have some fun
this summer, or did it just disappear from us in a flourish of activity that
was busyness rather than meaningful? Do we learn from such things? How will
we make adjustments?
These are the questions I ask myself,
especially at this time of year, and I thought I'd share them with you. I do
wonder. My girls are growing up and two are now basically gone from the
nest. While we knew it was coming, still, here it is. So, I wane
philosophically into the morning.
Max and I took a walk to the market
where I bought two Tuscan cantaloupe and a bag of fresh ground coffee. I
know its fresh because I did it myself. Not bad, either. Max liked the walk
and so did I. The sky is piercing blue as it seems a Colorado sky is at this
time of hear.
The fishing
is great right now. As you'll see, Ben, who's been guiding for the shop for
several years, hooked a beautiful brown trout on a dry fly on a recent trip
to the Yampa near Steamboat Springs. What a fish!
 |
That's Ben, casting upstream into a nice riffle just below a bend in the
river. I don't know what he was fishing, but he swears the fish ate a
dry fly. And I believe him, too. Even though Ben's an angler, sometimes
he tells the truth. |
|
Now the truth is in the pudding, so to speak. In this case, it's in the
picture and the fish. Look at that color! Look at the face of elation
below the fish. Oh. That's Ben! |
 |
 |
I don't know about you, but one picture of that fish and that happy face
was not enough. So, I'm sharing another for you to enjoy. The colors;
the spot; the fish; the memory. It's part of the reason we go fly
fishing. Right? |
|
While preparing to release such a wonderful fish, I'd take one last
look, too. Wouldn't you? The glory of it all becomes a reflection of
light on waters. It is curious, being on a trout stream. It portends
good things, some of which come true. |
 |
 |
When the fish is back in the
water and hovers for a few moments, looking back out into the alien
world it just visited and we look back, into the alien world we try to
approach with stealth and respect, both of us react in kind. The fish
swims off to sulk and recover, and forgets.
We check our line, knots and
fly and try again. And, we remember. |
Frank, who's guided and taught
classes for the past couple years, had a great weekend with his family near
Aspen and hooked some lovely fish. As it would be, Frank's son, Tim, sent me
a couple of shots from a trip to the Big T the other day. And the list goes
on.
|
Here's one of Tim's Brown
Trout from last week. The colors are different than Ben's fish, but they
are lovely to behold. Tim called me before he set out that day to ask
what was going on. "Just fish," I said.
He did; he did. |
 |
 |
It's another good looking
fish; rather like a clone of the first. That seems to be the case from
time to time. You'll hook one, then another and both fish look so much
alike it makes you wonder...
Maybe we should go soon. |
| Like father like son.
Hold the fish, take a pictures to share with Dale's readers and then let
them go. Dad, in this case, managed as pretty a rainbow as is possible.
Look at that stubby, fat guy! He is so colorful and beautiful. Worthy is
the fish... |
 |
The folks who are fishing are doing
great and enjoying their time on the water, away from phones and computers.
Leave now, and go fishing.
Here are some specific reports for you
to enjoy. Pick the spot you'd like to fish and have at it. And, have fun!
Whew! That was a lot of work, adding all that information and redoing the
pages it is found on. I hope you use and enjoy this info!
The fish I'm holding is a permit.
At first, as the story will tell you, I
thought
a permit was permission to go fishing somewhere, and that you probably had
to pay for it. As it turns out, it's a fish. A cool fish that's tough to
hook. I've added a couple of stories to the web page and I'd like you to
enjoy reading them, and perhaps making dreams of your own. They are here:
http://www.stvrainangler.com/permitmyfirstbezlie.htm and
http://www.stvrainangler.com/permitanyone.htm. Please let me know what
you think.
Also, keep in mind we host saltwater
trips to various destinations. Would you like to join me for one?
angler@peakpeak.com will get you in
touch and I'll fill you in on the details of the trip.

Even with all the writing,
encouraging, classes and so on September has been a very slow month for us.
Sad, but true. And the fishing has been fabulous. I've already had my
philosophical moment, so I'm announcing that we're going to have a blowout
sale of inventory that is overstocked. You'll have to come into the shop to
shop and get things during this week. We'll stay open late on Thursday and
Friday night to give you extra time to take advantage of it, too. We'll be
open until 8:00PM both nights.
Please come in a support your local
fly shop. We want to be here to encourage, teach, guide and so on.
Thanks! |
|
That's all that I've got for today.
This newsletter may seem short, but I spent lots of time writing and redoing
sections of the web page that are connected with the links. I hope you enjoy
reading them. Oh yeah, remember the other updated info at
http://www.stvrainangler.com/fallflyfishing92004.htm Fall fly fishing is
great; please take advantage of it and go fishing soon!
There are lots of pages that have been
redone in the past week. I hope you'll have a look around and enjoy reading
what's there.
Thanks for reading, and for being out
there. I wish you the best.
