St. Vrain Angler News & Muse January 3, 2006!

Greetings!
Happy New Year to one and all. I hope this finds you well. As
always,
thanks for reading.
What will 2006 bring? How shall we then live? Are you a maker of
resolutions? I, for one, rather enjoy the new year and thoughts of doing new
things; it makes me look within at thoughts, hopes and dreams. During this
reflection I try to measure that against the day-to-day and what is going on.
How will I then live? I'm still hopeful of peace and goodwill. I think it is an
individual responsibility and something that I will encourage at every turn.
There are changes on the horizon; I'll tell you more next week.
In the meantime let's enjoy a few pictures and thoughts about the coming year in
fly fishing.

Fishing is fun! It takes us to
beautiful places and refreshes our spirits.
It usually puts smiles on our faces, although there are those
who are stunned by holding such a lovely fish and forget to put the smile on
for the camera.

In order to
get better at fishing and to better appreciate fishing, one has to go
fishing.
While fishing,
deposits are made in one's memory banks. Once there these deposits grow.
They are always available to view, but one may not withdraw them for any
reason other than to take a look and recall and great time.
When we think
back, we remember time on the water. Do you know where you were in June
of 1982? I was fishing the Railroad Ranch on the Henry's Fork of the
Snake River in Idaho. I was with my friend Tom and we met another
friend, Jack and his family. I hooked the first big rainbow I'd ever
hooked and landed on a size #20 Blue Winged Olive. I know where we were
on the river. The fish was eighteen inches long and very fat. It fought
hard. Tom was with me. |

My friend
Frank was back at it last week. He went to the St. Vrain on
a
cold day and hooked these two lovely trout. The brown is a man, in my
opinion; beautiful to behold and amazing in his raiment. Agree?
The rainbow is
a beauty, as well. Wow!
Frank used his
Frank's Flashy Fly and one of
Dale's Midge Larva as a
dropper. He saw both fish in the water before casting and hooked each
one on the first drift through the pool. (Follow the links to tie the
flies.)
What is
Frank's advice?
"Nothing
replaces time on the water for learning to fly fish." |

Joe's smile
with this lovely permit (l) and Chuck's smile and way-bent fly rod (r)
tell some sort of story about fly fishing the flats. Many of
you
have expressed an interest in going on a trip like this and I'm going to
host another group in February, 2006, to Ascension Bay. I don't know the
dates yet as I'm holding out for a few more folks to join us.
Interested?
Please drop me a line by clicking on my email, then writing me a note:

I promise a
good time, good food, good staying and great memories of fast fish! |

In 2006 I'm
going to spend more time looking down a bent fly rod, and trying to
figure out what is in the net!
You? |

Flies are a good invention. We love to tie them, to fish
them, to
admire
them and to lose them in trees. I don't know why we like to lose them in
trees, but we do.
I,
for one, love tying flies. Every time I see a pile of hooks, some feathers
or a box with an empty slot I want to tie more flies.
In
a continuing effort to fulfill fly fishing dreams I'm working on a new
section on the web page about flies for the season. Take a look and see
what's there by following the link. If you have any specific questions be
sure to contact me via email at
